The NOI Techpark Alto Adige/Südtirol, whose construction began in 2017, stands as the region’s leading innovation hub and results from the transformation of a former aluminum production site into a contemporary science and technology district. The project, worth €35.000.000 and developing a total volume of approximately 140.000 m3, marks a symbolic and concrete shift from heavy industry to a modern “factory of ideas.”
The acronym NOI – Nature Of Innovation – simultaneously recalls the German word neu (“new”) and the Italian noi (“us”), encapsulating the open, collaborative, and experimental nature of the initiative. The historical industrial buildings have been completely renovated, enhanced, and integrated with new volumes, replacing transformers and furnaces with spaces devoted to research, technology, and creative development.
Today, the techpark hosts over 70 innovative companies and start ups, 4 research institutes, and 3 faculties of the Free University of Bolzano, forming a high density ecosystem of expertise and interdisciplinary collaboration. Across more than 40 high tech laboratories, researchers develop projects in multiple technological fields, sharing advanced equipment and multi user infrastructures.
This concentration of scientific, educational, and entrepreneurial activities demands a high level of spatial flexibility, adaptable layouts, and complex technological systems, from IT networks to specialized laboratory facilities. The NOI Techpark thus emerges as a strategic infrastructure that combines urban regeneration, contemporary architecture, and applied innovation, embodying the new knowledge district of South Tyrol.
