The redevelopment of the Monte Ivigna cable car, whose new construction phase began in 2010, aimed to upgrade both the valley and mountain stations to current technical and functional standards. Located on the outskirts of Merano, the lift connects the city with the renowned ski and hiking area of Merano 2000, serving as one of the key infrastructures for tourism and mobility in the region.
Infrastructure Becomes Landscape
A refurbished cable car linking Merano 2000 with contemporary, landscape-integrated structures.
The intervention required the complete demolition and reconstruction of the existing structures, with the goal of offering users enhanced comfort and an architectural identity consistent with the Alpine landscape. Each of the two stations is composed of three distinct volumes: a solid exposed reinforced concrete base, a glass access zone designed to ensure transparency and lightness, and a red expanded metal cladding that encloses and conceals the cableway’s mechanical equipment, becoming a recognizable architectural element.
For this project, HB was responsible for the structural execution design, developing technical solutions capable of meeting the complex operational and environmental requirements of a high altitude Alpine infrastructure.
